The emotion of music comes in part from melody and harmony, yet even with those stripped away there is still drama. Drumming rhythms exist in all cultures. A strong afternoon of drumming will lift your mood better than any drug or activity that I can think of. Drenched with sweat, tired and a bit sore, for a little while you put it all out there.

    I recently watched/listened to a drumming circle with twelve year-olds! It was amazing. Everyone in the room was either smiling, tapping or moving along with it.

    We have an ancient percussion form called “chanda melam” (literally war beats) in a Southern state of India. Hypnotic when heard live.

    Yes, drums are common to all cultures.
